Car buying scam
A car buying scam could affect local residents. This week a Waverly resident learned she had almost been scammed, possibly by an overseas resident, when the person offered to purchase a vehicle she had for sale.
The scam involves a phone call from a supposedly “hearing impaired” person who relays their conversation through an interpreter and is followed up by an e-mail.
According to a Web site that details vehicle buying schemes, a seller places an ad on the Internet, with an e-mail address, and the “buyer” says he will pay the full asking price and a little extra. The extra amount is for the shipping, is the usual excuse. The scamming buyer says he/she will pay with a cashier’s check.
